The Greatest Show On Grass: FBR Open - Day 1

Written by David P. DiFilippo

FBR OpenThe opening round of the 2009 FBR Open is in the books. A staggering 71,901 fans enjoyed a gorgeous, 72 degree sunny day and plenty of good golf. Australian James Nitties and American Lucas Glover share the leaderboard after each shooting a 6-under-par 65.

Nitties, the Q-School runner up last fall, shot a 31/34 for his share of the lead.  Playing in just his 3rd Tour event, Nitties lists “clubbing and girls” among his hobbies.  Seems like he will enjoy his time in Scottsdale this week.

Glover, carded a seven birdie, one bogey round effort 32/33.  Glover is looking for his first Tour win since 2005.

Defending champ J.B. Holmes started his defense of his Thunderbird trophy by shooting a back-nine 31 that included six birdies. On the front side however, Holmes faltered bogeying four holes and shooting a pedestrian 39 to fall into a tie for 36th place.

Other big names that struggled today included fan favorite Phil Mickelson, who shot the worst season opening round in his career (+5, 76); up and comer Anthony Kim (+ 2, 73) and three-time winner Mark Calcavecchia who carded a +3, 74.

Play was suspended because of darkness with three groups still on the course. They will resume at 8:00 a.m. local time today.

After golf, the FBR’s spotlight turns directly to the Coor’s Light Bird’s Nest.  This legendary tent holds thousands of party goers and tonight, O. A. R is the headline act.

Hailed as one of the best live bands on the planet, O. A. R. has gone from college/underground success to mainstream stardom during their 13 year existence. This Scottsdale stop will highlight songs from their sixth studio CD “All Sides”.

The Coor’s Light Birds Nest is a 21+ venue and tickets range from $25 for general admission to $175 for VIP access.

A final thought……if you think Opening Day at the FBR is fun, you should see Friday.
