Superstition Mountain Set to Host Arizona Junior Boys and Girls State Championships

Print E-mail

Superstition MountainSuperstition Mountain is set to host the top juniors in the state at the Arizona Junior Boy’s and Girl’s State Championship, Presented by the Arizona Golf Association and sponsored by the Vogel Family Foundation and Southwest Section PGA. This two round event is set to be played on July 7-8, 2009 on the Nicklaus-designed Prospector Course.

The Junior State Championship is an invitational event for boys and girls ages 13-18 whom are JGAA competition members. The field is limited to only 60 boys and 30 girls whom have qualified for the event via prior finishes and local qualifying events held in June.

“We are excited to host the top juniors in Arizona for this prestigious event,” stated Jason Walter, Director of Golf at Superstition Mountain. “The greens will be running close to 12 on the Stimpmeter so the competitors will be tested on and around the green surfaces.” The Prospector Course where the event is being played was designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Gary Nicklaus.

No stranger to hosting prestigious events, Superstition Mountain has played host to the LPGA Safeway Invitational, the Countrywide Tradition and the Senior Slam. Many of the games greats including Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin, Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa, have competed at Superstition Mountain. Recently, Superstition Mountain played host to another prestigious junior event, the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Boys Team Championship, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.

Last year, the girl and boy segments of the Arizona Junior State Championships were conducted at separate facilities. The girl’s event was held at another OB Sports facility, Talking Rock in Prescott, where Sun Gyoung Park took top honors. The 2008 Boys event was played at Forest Highlands in Flagstaff where Nicholas Losoele III topped all others. Nicholas Losole III is in this year’s field to defend his title.
