Club West Golf ClubThe 6th Annual Mesa Thunderbird Golf Tournament will take place at Club West Golf Club on Friday, May 1, 2009. The Shotgun start will begin at promptly 7:30 am.

Proceeds from this well-attended event will benefit the Thunderbirds football program, long considered one of the state’s top squads.

Cost for the event is just $120 per person, and includes golf, cart with GPS, practice range usage and a tasty lunch after the round. Many sponsorship opportunities exist as well.

Thunderbirds, Tour Begin Search for New Sponsor Print E-mail

FBR OpenPHOENIX - The Thunderbirds, FBR and the PGA Tour announced today that they would begin the transition process toward securing a new title sponsor of the FBR Open in 2011. It was agreed that all parties would benefit from beginning the search process for a new title sponsor as soon as possible. As per the terms of their sponsorship agreement, FBR will continue as the title sponsor through the 2010 tournament.

"FBR has been the finest partner a tournament could ask for," said Tim Louis, Big Chief of The Thunderbirds, hosts of the FBR Open. "Together, we have become the leader in charitable giving on the PGA Tour. While we are extremely disappointed we need to find a new sponsor, we are pleased that we were able to work out a plan that gives us a reasonable timeframe to replace FBR with as little impact or disruption as possible. When FBR told us of their decision not to continue beyond 2010, we concluded that this early transitional strategy made the most sense for everyone involved."

Woods to Make His Return at Accenture Match Play Championship Print E-mail

Tiger Woods returns next week in ArizonaTiger Woods will make his return to competitive golf at the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship, Feb. 23 - March 1, at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, after knee surgery caused him to miss eight months of competition. Woods will be part of a field that is expected to feature the top 64 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, including Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson. The top 64 from the World Ranking released on Feb. 16 have until 5 p.m. ET tomorrow (Feb. 20) to officially commit to the tournament. Brackets will be released on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. ET, when they become official.

"Elin and our new son Charlie are doing great," Woods wrote on his Web site. "I've enjoyed my time at home with the family and appreciate everyone's support and kind wishes.

Accenture Match Play ChampionshipTournament officials are pleased to announce that the Hagen Club ticket packages have sold out for the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, in Marana, Ariz., on Feb. 23 - March 1. However, there are a limited number of daily, weekly and Canyon Club tickets remaining as the tournament approaches.

We-Ko-Pa Golf ClubScottsdale-based OB Sports Golf Management announces the selection of We Ko Pa Golf Club, Sandia Golf Club and The Legacy Golf Club to GolfWorld’s prestigious list of “The 100 Best Golf Shops in America.”

This year marks the fifth time for We-Ko-Pa (located in Fort McDowell, Ariz.) and the third time that both The Legacy (located in Henderson, Nev.) and Sandia Golf Club (located in Albuquerque, N.M.) have been selected and as one of “The 100 Best Golf Shops in America,”.

Each club submitted an application that included descriptions of sales initiatives, successful promotions and steps that were taken to overcome their largest challenge during the 2008 golf season. A detailed financial report was submitted to reflect annual revenue. The facilities also defined how they applied effective marketing practices to maximize revenue. Lastly, six photos were included to showcase the merchandise displays and overall layout within the golf shops.

With a 22-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole, Perry outlasted a game Charley Hoffman to pick up his 13th career PGA Tour victory and a check for more than $1 million dollars.

TPC Scottsdale Named Host Venue for  2009 Champions Tour National Qualifying FinalsThe PGA TOUR announced today that TPC Scottsdale in Arizona has been selected as host venue for the 2009 Champions Tour National Qualifying Finals.

The culmination of two stages of regional qualifying, the Champions Tour National Qualifying Finals will be held Nov. 17-20 on the club’s Champions Course. The top-five finishers will receive fully-exempt status on the 2010 Champions Tour, with finishers 6-12 receiving conditional cards.

Built in 2007 on the former site of the Desert Course by golf course architect Randy Heckenkemper – who served as part of Tom Weiskopf’s original design team in 1987, the par-71, 7,124-yard Champions Course rivals its more famous sister course, the Stadium Course, in both beauty and playability.

Mesa’s Longbow Golf Club will host the fifth annual Longbow Golf Fest on Saturday, January 24, 2009; beginning at 9 a.m.

This community golf event is designed to introduce new golfers to the game, provide a venue for avid golfers to hone their skills and test new equipment from major golf equipment manufacturers. Attendees will have the opportunity to demo as well as purchase (at preferred prices) the latest golf equipment from major manufacturers such as Ping, Nike, Titleist, Cleveland Golf and more. As an added bonus, the first 100 people in attendance will receive a complimentary ticket to the upcoming FBR Open.

There will be numerous instructional opportunities available throughout the day as Longbow’s staff of teaching professionals will be on hand giving free lessons. In addition, a complimentary golf clinic geared towards junior golfers will be held. A raffle featuring great prizes (and benefiting junior golf) will be held throughout the day. Last year’s event raised much needed funds for area junior golf programs.

Southwest Section PGA Names Annual Special Award RecipientsThe Southwest Section PGA recently announced its 2008 Special Award Winners at its annual meeting.

Matthew Grobe of Dragon Ridge Golf Club in Las Vegas won the Bill Strausbaugh Award, which recognizes PGA Professionals “who by their day-to-day efforts have distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community.”

Geoffrey Huston of Arizona State’s PGM Program won the Horton Smith Award, which recognizes the PGA Professional who is the model educator of PGA Golf Professionals. The award is designed to give special recognition to an individual PGA Professional for outstanding and continuing contributions to professional education.

Seven OB Sports-Managed Courses Honored By Golfweek Magazine Print E-mail

Longbow Golf ClubSCOTTSDALE, Az. - Seven OB Sports-managed golf courses were honored by Golfweek magazine in several ranking categories including Best New, Best Casino, Top 100 Resort Courses and Top 100 Residential Courses. The David McLay Kidd-designed Tetherow Golf Club and the John Fought-designed Players Course at Indian Wells Golf Resort were honored as 2008 Best New Courses.

Four OB Sports-managed courses were ranked in the Top 100 Resort Courses for 2009 with We-Ko-Pa Golf Club's Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw-designed Saguaro Course at No. 16 and the Scott Miller-designed Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa coming in at No. 38. Sandia Golf Club and the Ken Kavanaugh-designed Longbow Golf Club debuted in this prestigious Top 100 ranking at No. 79 and No. 89 respectively.

SunRidge Canyon Golf ClubGolf World magazine readers chose SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills as the 26th best public golf course in the United States in a recent Reader’s Choice poll conducted by the magazine.

Reader’s Choice Awards were based solely on reader input gathered by Golf Digest Publications’ Research Resource Center via an online poll conducted this summer. For a facility to be ranked, it had to receive a minimum number of reader evaluations. Readers graded facilities using a 10-point scale based on various criteria, including quality of course, condition of course, reputation/prestige, speed of play, golf pro shop, service and overall value.

Wildfire Golf Club Raises $50,331 at Charity Golf Tournament Print E-mail

JW Marriott Wildfire Golf Club, one of the premier golf resort destinations in Arizona, today announced that $50,331 was raised at the 7th Annual Children's Miracle Network Charity Golf Tournament held on Monday, September 15, 2008. All of the proceeds from this year's tournament were donated to the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The 2008 event marked the 7th consecutive year that Wildfire Golf Club hosted this charitable event. With an outstanding turnout of 288 participants, golfers teed it up on two of the Valley's most beautiful golf courses, the Palmer Signature Course and the Faldo Championship Course, while supporting a very worthy cause.
