Beckman earns big come from behind win at Grayhawk

Print E-mail

Cameron Beckman of San Antonio, Texas fired a 7 under, 63 to win the 2nd Frys.com Open held at Scottsdale’s Grayhawk Golf Club.

Beckman, 176th on the money list and 447th in the world ranking coming into the tournament, had already skipped eight weeks this season because of back problems and was in danger of losing his tour card for 2009. He started the day 5 shots behind Kevin Sutherland and finally caught him after 72 holes.

Frys.com Open

To force the playoff, Beckman played incredible golf, making birdies on six of his last ten holes. Sutherland on the other hand, missed putts of 13 and 9 feet that would have won it both at the end of regulation and on the first playoff hole.

The second playoff hole was the 464-yard, par-4 17th, and it was a awful for Sutherland. His second shot went far to the right over a cart path and into the dirt. His third shot went over the green and down a hill.

Beckman, meanwhile, hit his second shot to 6 feet from the pin. He just missed the Birdie putt and the tap-in Par gave him his second PGA TOUR victory.

His first was the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in 2001. With the victory, he earned $900,000 and a 2 year TOUR exemption.
