The Southwest Section PGA and the Arizona Women’s Golf Association (AWGA) have partnered with the WNBA to host “WNBA/PGA Play Golf America Day.” The event is scheduled before and during a Phoenix Mercury game at U.S. Airways Center in downtown Phoenix on August 29, 2009.
The WNBA contest pits the Mercury, currently in first place in the
Western Conference, against the Connecticut Sun in a 7 p.m. start.
As
part of the promotion, the Southwest Section PGA will have access to
discounted tickets for its 1,400 plus members. In addition, the
Scottsdale-based organization will have several PGA Professionals
onsite prior to the game to provide complimentary swing tips at an
inflatable net in the plaza outside the arena The golf pro’s will
also offer short game lessons to fans at a putting green inside U.S.
Airways Center.
The AWGA, Arizona's leader in women's golf since 1924, will also have access to tickets for its 25,000 members, will
set up a table to distribute information, and host a putting contest.
Fans will be encouraged to fill out registration forms from the SWSPGA
that will enter them in a raffle to win free golf foursomes and
equipment.
The Phoenix Mercury will promote the PGA of America through a public service announcement on its scoreboard.
There
are several other pre-game activities planned. Vito Berlingeri,
marketing director for the Southwest Section PGA, said a local PGA
member, along with a representative of women’s golf, will speak to a
group of underserved girls from Carl Hayden High School in an effort to
teach the young women about golf etiquette. Another AWGA ambassador
will address Mercury season ticket holders. “This should be a great
evening for everyone who participates,” Berlingeri said. “We’re looking
forward to it on many levels.”
The Mercury will also host “Back to School Night” on the 29th, the
Mercury’s annual back to school celebration encourages fans to bring a
pair of pajamas (child or adult) to benefit the Pajama Program, which
provides clothes to families in shelters across Arizona.
As part of the Play Golf America experience, 13 PGA of America
sections are coordinating a “Game Day Experience” in the 13 WNBA
markets.
